Episode Overview

The opening of Lucifer season 5, episode 5, “Detective Amenadiel”

Lucifer has a surprise for Chloe so blindfolds her and brings her to a beach. He tells her to burn a gift on the beach as a way of letting go of one part of her life. Chloe thinks it’s a good idea however, she tells Lucifer needs time and space. Lucifer is just not getting it is the…

Hell needs no-one

Lucifer tells Linda that he’s urgently trying to patch things up with Chloe so he can return to Hell and Amenadiel can come home. However, Amenadiel has already returned. He’s home. Amenadiel says he heard a voice from Father saying Hell doesn’t need anyone anymore — Lucifer is frustrated that he spent millennia in Hell for no reason. There will definitely be more to this — it’s just too simple.
Why did my mother abandon me?
Maze also has parent issues. She tells Linda that her mother Lily is a b*tch after visiting her. Linda defends Lily because she’s left a baby girl behind before. The maze is disgusted and leaves Linda’s office.
Maze returns to Linda’s office later and Linda tells her story. She explains how she was unprepared and didn’t know how to handle it all — “I didn’t have the strength to raise her”. Linda explains how she walked out of the hospital and never returned and misses her baby girl every single day. Maze hints that she knows who her daughter is.
A nun is murdered
As usual, there’s a new investigation; a nun has been murdered at a monastery — Sister Victoria a.k.a Victoria Reynard. Chloe asks a group of nuns some questions but they are all acting suspiciously. Amenadiel comes to help her with the investigation — she evidently doesn’t want Detective Lucifer by her side at present. Amenadiel is clearly having an effect on the nuns and Mother Angelica gives up herself for arrest.

Paperwork

Lucifer tries to help the investigation back at the station with Dan with the paperwork and analyzing key findings. He finds the whole process boring and wants to go out and talk to the nuns directly — he’s like a child sometimes but it offers comedic moments. Lucifer laughs at Detective Amenadiel for working with Chloe and is surprised that they apparently make a good team. Dan shows Lucifer the phone records and the missing calls. Lucifer recognizes one of the phone numbers; it’s Destiny Page’s number. Of course, he knows her.

Questioning

Mother Angelica tells Amenadiel and Chloe that she didn’t kill Sister Victoria. Chloe asks Angelica if it’s “Control or faith” you can’t have it both ways. Angelica states that Chloe has the strength to work out this case. Chloe raises the star Destiny Page; apparently, she was speaking to the nuns about being a new convert.

Meeting the long lost daughter

Lucifer season 5, episode 5 provides more pain for Maze as the discovery for her mother has brought on unexpected truths.
Maze shows Linda who her daughter is — Adriana. They visit Adriana’s house and Linda is overwhelmed by seeing her daughter — Maze and Linda ask her many abandonment questions but Linda isn’t ready to tell her. Maze calls her a coward but Linda claims she isn’t Lilith.
Afterward, Maze visits Lily’s apartment and learns she has died. She walks around the place; she’s angry and upset. There’s no closure. This will impact the character for the foreseeable.

Episode Overview

The opening of Lucifer season 5, episode 4, “It Never Ends Well for the Chicken”

Lucifer sets up “Game Night” yet no-one is showing up apart from Trixie. It might be his last night on Earth so wants to make the most of it. Trixie wants Lucifer to tell him a story. This is certainly a one-off special episode.

Once Upon a Time

Lucifer sits next to Trixie and starts his story — the Devil visits New York City in 1946. We are now getting a noir black and white grading. Lucifer keeps narrating; crime was on the rise but the war was over and there were loads of possibilities.

Lilith the famous singer

Lucifer goes to the Garden Club — Lilith, Maze’s mother, is singing at the club and Lucifer is enjoying it. Lily and Lucifer have a drink and catch up. Lily references how everything was copacetic until someone stole her ring. She states her rings means everything to her and wants Lucifer to help get it back.

Enlisting Jack

Lucifer needs help with the investigation. Trixie wants the detective helping him to be female — Jack (Chloe) is the person who helps him. Lucifer offers money for help to find the ring. They talk to the barwoman, Gertie (played by Linda), and ask her if they know about Lily’s ring — she references a Lucky Larry and gives a description for more money. Episode 4 is an old-fashioned crime mystery.

Mr. Stompanato

Jack speaks to a man nearby and asks if he knows a Lucky Larry. When Lucifer and Jack go outside they are ambushed and end up in a small fight. Mr. Stompanato (played by Ella) turns up. Mr. Stompanato tells Lucifer and Jack to stop snooping around.

Lucky Larry turns up

At home, Jack and his wife Shirley are going through a rough patch. Lucky Larry arrives at Jack’s house and he’s been stabbed in the back. He collapses and he’s dead-on Jack’s doorstep. The story is getting more and more dramatic with each scene.

Relationship problems

Lucifer pries into Jack’s love life. Jack has learned that Shirley was a Call Girl, so it wasn’t fated that they got together; someone paid her to approach Jack. Lucifer asks Jack if she’s considered forgetting about it. This part of the story is purposefully linked to Lucifer and Chloe as Chloe believes her fate has been pre-determined by outside forces and it cripples her perspective.

Meeting Willy

Lucifer season 5, episode 4 sees more characters get introduced to the story and the cast enjoys the 40s.
Lucifer and Jack meets Willy (played by Dan) and ask him about the ring. Jack raises how Willy had a heated exchange with Lucky Larry the day before and then ended up dead. Willy says he knows Larry because he purchased a trinket off him from time to time.

Episode Overview

The opening of Lucifer season 5, episode 3, “¡Diablo!”
Lucifer is infuriated by his twin brother assuming his identity. Amenadiel is worried about Charlie and that Michael has the only line to Father; apparently, he has power in the Silver City. Michael might be a bigger problem for Lucifer than he first realized.

It’s really you

Lucifer returns and Chloe does not believe it is him. He has to convince Chloe and uses his persuasive powers. Chloe is ecstatic that it’s really him and gives him a hug.
Lucifer tells her he cannot stay for long. Chloe raises how Michael told her she is a gift from God made just for him and Lucifer’s smile disappears; he tells her that whether she was made for him or not, it doesn’t matter to him. Chloe wants to continue with her job and walks off. This changes their dynamic entirely — Chloe will feel her whole life was a lie and pre-determined.

Murdered man and the TV show

A a man named Matt Owens has been stabbed to death at a film studio. Lucifer turns up at the crime scene and wants to know that Chloe’s okay. Chloe keeps sarcastically making God’s Gift jokes. Suddenly Lucifer sees the stabbed man and says he knows him. Matt works on a show that resolves around Lucifer’s life called “Diablo”. Lucifer spent loads of time with the showrunner. This is typically narcissistic of the character.

Chloe and Lucifer attend the set. One of the actors calls Matt Owens a maniac and is not surprised that he was stabbed. Some of the cast think Keri Belwood, Matt’s number two, could have killed him.

Lazy and a control freak

Chloe goes to talk to Keri Belwood. She claims that Matt was the worst kind of boss; lazy and a control freak and also a drug user that could have been caught up with a bad drug deal.

Angry Maze

While trying to repair all the mess Michael left behind, Maze ends up in a fight with Lucifer. She’s angry that he went to Hell without her. Eventually, she walks off and tells Lucifer to stab Michael himself. Lucifer is nonchalant about her accusations and asks why she didn’t come down to Hell herself.

 Episode Overview

The opening of Lucifer season 5, episode 2, “Lucifer! Lucifer! Lucifer!”
Episode 2 opens at a Mars project center. One of the participants is murdered through the night. At the police station, Chloe tells Ella that Lucifer is back and asks her to cut him a bit of slack — as we saw in the last episode, it doesn’t seem to be the actual Lucifer so this makes an interesting chapter.

New investigation and a new Lucifer

Chloe starts her new investigation; biochemist and commander of the Red 2 Mars Project had been murdered — she was called Judy. Ella explains how no-one can leave and enter the dome so it must be one of the crew members. Lucifer enters the crime scene and Ella is angry at him but he gives his excuses. Chloe grabs Lucifer and tells him he lied to Ella and he never lies. Lucifer explains how he was in Hell for thousands of years and that may come with improvements.

Lucifer has changed

Chloe visits Linda and tells her that Lucifer is different now he’s back. Linda explains that it has been a thousand years for him; Chloe raises how Lucifer has reconsidered his position on honesty. Lucifer and Chloe interview the crew members; Chloe seems erred that Lucifer is not doing what he usually does and tries encouraging him. Afterward, she asks him if he wants to do something impulsive and sinful but he doesn’t seem up to anything. This version of Lucifer did not know how to be Lucifer at all.

Bitter crew member

Lucifer and Chloe do more digging and learn of a bitter engineer who was removed from the Mars project called Donovan. As they move to the next phase of the case, Lucifer tells Chloe that his feelings haven’t changed but he would appreciate more time to adjust. Later, Maze attacks Lucifer and she’s angry he went home without her. She reveals he isn’t Lucifer and Mazes suspects that he’s his twin brother Michael.

Lucifer S5 E1: Really Sad Devil Guy

Overview:

Lucifer had a long road to Netflix. After Fox canceled the procedural comic book adaptation in 2018 for the crime of having a consistent fanbase of mediocre numbers, the streaming service picked it up in a shock acquisition, and it's strong the fourth season appeared to do quite well in its new home. Lucifer fans were convinced that the show and its stars, Tom Ellis and Lauren German, would be back for a triumphant fifth season, but more mixed news arrived instead: Season 5 was a go, but this time it would be Lucifer’s last hurrah.
Bracing themselves for this summer’s final season, fans accepted that perhaps Lucifer had finally run its course – there was no huge resurgence of 2018’s invigorating #SaveLucifer the campaign, Ellis wouldn’t be touring conventions and talk shows hyping up the possibility of another revival, and the cast presumably started looking for new roles elsewhere. Just as reality sunk in, though, reports started circulating that maybe Lucifer wasn’t quite so dead after all. Eventually, Netflix confirmed those reports and announced that a sixth season was happening, along with renewed assurances that this time it would definitely (definitely!) be the end of the road.
Season 5 already has a lot to live up to. The series’ fourth run on Netflix finally gave Chloe a chance to accept Lucifer for who he really was rather than keeping the truth just out of her reach. Then the show threw a spanner in the works with the arrival of Eve, who was said to be Lucifer’s first love. Eventually, Lucifer realized that wasn’t true, but he and Chloe’s long-awaited embrace turned into a devastating goodbye when he was forced to reaffirm his reign over Hell to protect those closest to him, and stop a potential demon invasion of Earth.

This season’s themes are set up deftly. The writing team is at the top of their game by now and know exactly how to construct each episode of the show. Before we know it, we’re sinking our teeth into the first case of the season, even as some gnawing interpersonal problems between the main players start to stack up in a typically frustrating fashion.
We’re used to finding the gang treading water in their own unique way as each season opens, and Season 5 quickly blesses us with that familiarity again. Dan is adorably insufferable, Maze takes every personal mission about fifteen steps too far, Chloe pretends everything is just fine, and Amenadiel tries to pick up the pieces and assert his usefulness.

Season 5 also offers our characters some interesting new challenges, and remarkably fresh dynamics emerge between them. It’s clear that the writers felt emboldened in their ambitions while they had an endpoint for the series insight, and a spectacularly fun black and white noir the episode in Season 5 takes some previously unseen risks with its storytelling – Lucifer’s ‘case of the week’ format is really starting to strain at the seams.

It feels like the erstwhile ‘finality’ of the show gave the cast a a lot more permission to explore their characters. Not only are they clearly having a blast, they’re given room to flesh out what each of them mean to each other in a way they never have before, with Lesley-Ann Brandt, in particular, putting in some truly award-worthy work in the first set of eight episodes. Aimee Garcia’s endlessly-lovable Ella also gets to sink her teeth into an extended storyline, albeit one that will make you anxious for her the whole time it’s playing out.

In Season 5, Lucifer continues to hold up the flaws of humanity as a mirror to his own personal failings, and learns a little more about what it means to exist in a moral middle ground that’s neither heavenly nor truly evil. Part of the enduring appeal of the series is that nothing is ever as black or white as any of us wish it were, except for the purest love that we’re able to offer each other.
Lucifer certainly doesn’t linger in Hell for very long, but things are a little different by the time he absconds again. From his point of view, he’s been gone for thousands of years, and while he’s been away his identical twin brother Michael (yes, that old chestnut) has been determined to wreck the connections he still has on Earth, especially if he can’t snatch them for himself.

Of course, this series is rarely better than when star Tom Ellis gets free reign to shine, and Lucifer’s fifth season gives him twice the opportunity to do so – why have just one Tom Ellis on the screen when you can have two for the same price?

Unfortunately, the addition of Lucifer’s twin brother Michael is a bit of a let-down compared to the show’s previous villains. In this first half of the season, he doesn’t get to be as delightfully manipulative as he potentially could have been. It’s a shame, but there’s much more to come in Season 5, as teased in its final twist. If the back half continues with the same level of ambition, we’ll be in for quite a ride.
